College Basketball 2013-2014: SportsBoss Power Index (SBPI) thru 2/23/14 action

After nearly 2 full calendar years of work, tweaking and adjusting I am finally ready to publish my initial SportsBoss Power Index (SBPI) of all 351 teams in college basketball!  It has taken a ton of work, many adjustments and tweaks, but I feel comfortable with the numbers, and have finally mathematically found a way to minimize the number of “outliers” where publishing these figures makes sense.

Without further ado here are the numbers for the Top 100 teams:

Here is the LEGEND that explains each figure in the above matrix:
1st column OFF: rating of each team’s offense
2nd column DEF: rating of each team’s defense
3rd column SUM: each team’s offense rating plus each team’s defense rating
4th column RANK: how each team’s sum rating ranks versus the other 351 teams in the country
5th column SOS: adjustment to be made for schedule each team has faced to date
6th column ADJ RATING: SUM from above times 1 plus the SOS adjustment
7th column RANK: how each team’s SOS sum rating ranks versus the other 351 teams in the country

One important aspect to remember when examining and potentially using these ratings in your handicapping is my formula weights each of my 10 statistics (on offense & defense) evenly in this presentation.  We do know however that effective FG % for example will have more of an impact on scoring points and thus winning games versus offensive rebounds – but each is significant and correlated to scoring points.  The best rating a team could earn is 200 on offense & defense before being adjusted for SOS.

For comparison purposes let’s take a look at my Top 25, the AP Top 25, ESPN/USATODAY Top 25, KenPom Top 25, Sagarin Top 25, RPI Top 25 and BPI Top 25:

There are four teams that stand out in my ratings compared to the other indices mentioned (and we could thus be bullish on the squads):
  • #8 Tennessee
  • #17 Baylor
  • #21 Providence
  • #25 Maryland
Next up let’s examine conference by conference SOS so we can get a feel for which conferences are the toughest, likely leading to additional teams earning bids for the NCAA Tournament:

We all know the Big Ten is likely the strongest conference simply by using the eye test and the rankings, but in addition the SBPI support that conference as being the best from top to bottom.  Next up is somewhat of a surprise perhaps with the Big East – how are they ranked 2nd, ahead of the ACC & Big 12 for example?  Remember these ratings look at conferences from top to bottom, meaning if conference have badly rated teams at the bottom of their league it will impact their conference rating.  The Big East has 10 schools in the conference and NINE of those teams are ranked in the Top 66 in SOS adjusted rating with only Seton Hall rating outside at a non-awful #93.  The ACC has 15 schools in the conference now and SIX rank #90 or worse which more than offsets the fact they also have 4 in the top 12 & 6 in the Top 25 (no ACC team currently ranks between #26-59.  The Big 12’s highest ranked team is Baylor at #17, but of the 9 schools in the conference 8 are in the Top 58 with TCU #203 really dragging down the conference’s overall rating.

For this entry I wanted to get the data out there and hopefully spark some conversation from my Twitter followers and clients.  I would love to hear from anyone and everyone via email, leaving comments here or on Twitter – I respond to everyone.  In coming editions of these ratings I will get into more discussions on a team by team basis.  I have set all these files up to automatically update each morning so I will keep everyone abreast of significant changes to teams in the power conferences – but I have found there isn’t many dramatic moves at all which makes my formula all the better.
