NCAA FOOTBALL SBPI: Top 20 from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013



In an attempt to provide more color (and show my back-testing) behind the College Football SBPI [SportsBoss Power Index] here is what the Top 20 looked like from each of the last five seasons (teams highlighted in yellow won National Championship).  

LEGEND:
OFF: ranking of team’s offense
DEF: ranking of team’s defense
TOTAL: ranking of total team performance
AP: Final AP ranking
SAG: Final Sagarin ranking
RATING: total team performance rating adjusted for SOS
RANK: Final SBPI ranking

Four of the last five National Champions were either rated #1 or #2 by SBPI – the lone outlier was the 2010 Auburn Tigers who checked in at #12.

Looking back at the past five seasons provides us more depth & background at how successful the SBPI is; back-testing any model is critical before putting it “into action”, and we see how solid the results are after one plus year of tweaks on it.  You can also compare teams across seasons by using the ratings column on far right.
