NCAAF 2014: SBPI [SportsBoss Power Index] through Week SIX

For the FIRST TIME ever, after slightly more than ONE YEAR of tweaking we are publishing our College Football SBPI (SportsBoss Power Index)!  Similar to the College Basketball SBPI that we started posting about last season (and keep an eye here during the month of October as we will be posting TONS of entries on this topic), the College Football version is a comprehensive study of the most critical statistical categories where we grade each team’s performance in each area game by game, and adjust for SOS to provide us with our power ratings.  This index has been back-tested 10+ seasons, just like the College Basketball SBPI, and provides EXCELLENT insight into the TRUE STRENGTH of each team in the country – removing the bias we see all too often in the mainstream media.

In our initial installment today we will post the Top 50 teams in the country – in future editions we will drop down to the Top 20.  Without further ado here are the rankings through action on Saturday October 4th – we will also include the AP Poll, USA Today Poll, ESPN’s FPI & Sagarin’s rankings which can all be used as a solid comparison tool:

 Few items of note:
  • These numbers above in no way represent Power Ratings that can be used to project spreads – those power ratings use this matrix as a guide, but they ultimately fit into another scale which will remain for my eyes only
  • Here are the teams that are NOT in my Top 50 currently but ARE inside the Top 25 of at least one of the comparison indices I show above:
    • Florida State: check in at #56 just outside my Top 50; they would certainly be inside the Top 50 had QB Jameis Winston played in the Clemson game HOWEVER they certainly have not looked great in any game so far this season with the lone exception perhaps last week vs. Wake Forest.  Make no mistake there is plenty of action left for the Seminoles to climb the ratings
    • Arizona State: ranked #57 in SBPI but check in at #20 in both polls.  Keep in mind they have not had star QB Taylor Kelly under center for their last two games, although their backup has played pretty well including leading the Sun Devils to a road win at USC last Saturday
Next up let’s look at the Top 10 non-Power 5 conference teams:

Amazing thus far that the Memphis Tigers lead the non-Power 5 conference rankings – did anyone have that?!?  They are also the only non-Power 5 conference school ranked inside the Top 31 in the country.  We then see a few of the bigger name mid-major squads many expected to be strong this season checking in between #30 and #40.  One item of note is two teams on this list have lost their starting QB: Utah State’s Chuckie Keaton is out for the season, much like last year although his backup Garretson played a lot last year & is a much better passer while BYU lost their best player, staringt QB Taysom Hill last week in the Cougars home loss to the aforementioned Aggies.
Lastly here are the Bottom 10 teams according to College Football SBPI:

Vanderbilt is the only Power 5 conference team to show up amongst the worst 10 teams in the country, checking in at #124.  SMU & Eastern Michigan are the two lowest rated teams which probably comes as no surprise to most college football fans.  Kent State is 3rd worst but keep in mind they have lost their top 2 QBs and could/are likely to fall into the mix with EMU & SMU for worst team in the country this season.

That is our initial installment of the College Football SBPI.  We will likely continue posting this article on a weekly basis, targeting Wednesday’s.
