West Virginia held the #1 spot all season, to the surprise
of myself and I am sure everyone reading this.
Their final SBPI rating of 437.8 as the 9th best team of the
last 16 seasons (as far back as the SBPI goes), which is obviously incredible
and stands out as a lone wolf of sorts.
What else is interesting is the Mountaineers were the only team in the
2015-2016 season to register a rating of 400.0 or above – how odd is that? Here is a chart showing number of teams that finished at that minimum rating in each season:

So it is not unprecedented but it’s just the third time in
sixteen seasons we saw only one team reach 400.0. Last year we had a record FIVE teams hit the
400.0 rating including the National Champion Duke Blue Devils, who finished
last year at a rating of 425.8, which was tops in the country.
This year’s National Champion Villanova finished the year
ranked 2nd in SBPI with a rating of 394.8, which would slot them as
the 42nd best team over the last 16 seasons according to SBPI. In addition this was the 4th best
Villanova team over the same time period, trailing:
- 2006 team (448.4 rating,
#1 that season, #6 overall)
- 2005 team (410.8 rating,
#2 that season, #25 overall)
- 2015 team (408.4 rating,
#5 that season, #29 overall)
